20ft Container Home / Granny Flat
A 20ft converted into a compact self-contained living space. Insulated, lined, plumbed and wired — a studio, a granny flat, a cabin.
A small home, built properly
Twenty feet is roughly fifteen square metres, which is a studio rather than a house. Done well it is genuinely comfortable: a sleeping and living area, a compact bathroom, a kitchenette, and enough insulation and glazing that it feels like a room rather than a box.
Insulation is not optional
An uninsulated steel container is uninhabitable in the Australian climate — brutally hot in summer, freezing and streaming with condensation in winter. Every home conversion we build is insulated throughout, walls, ceiling and floor, and lined. Anyone offering you a cheaper container home without this is selling you something you cannot live in.
Approvals — read this before you commit
A container home is a habitable building and it is subject to your local council’s planning and building requirements. Rules on secondary dwellings, setbacks, footings, services, bushfire and flood overlays vary enormously between councils, and a container does not sidestep any of them.
Talk to your council before you order. We build to your requirements, but we cannot obtain approvals for you, and a beautifully finished unit you are not permitted to occupy helps nobody.
